Biei patchwork hills — Hokkaido 5-day itinerary

Biei's patchwork hills — one of Hokkaido's most iconic landscapes

Five days is the ideal length for a first visit to Hokkaido. It's enough time to experience the island's diversity — from the urban sophistication of Sapporo to the historic port of Otaru, the mountain resort of Niseko, and the breathtaking rural landscapes of Biei and Furano.

This classic route is designed for visitors arriving at New Chitose Airport and travelling by private car hire, giving you the freedom to stop wherever you choose and travel at your own pace.

5-Day Route Overview

Day 1: Arrive at New Chitose — Settle into Sapporo

Your JapanMe driver will meet you at New Chitose Airport arrivals hall and transfer you directly to your Sapporo hotel. After a long-haul flight from the USA or Australia, the 50–70 minute private transfer is a welcome introduction to Hokkaido's scenery.

Spend the afternoon at your own pace — Odori Park, the historic Clock Tower, and the Former Hokkaido Government Office are all within walking distance of central Sapporo hotels. In the evening, explore Susukino for Hokkaido's finest miso ramen and fresh seafood.

Day 2: Sapporo to Otaru — A Day by the Sea

Otaru is just 30 minutes from Sapporo by private car, making it an easy and rewarding day trip. The town's preserved stone warehouses, canal-side walkways, and artisan shops create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Hokkaido.

Morning: The canal and old town

Arrive early to walk the Otaru Canal before the crowds. The canal is lined with gas lamps and 19th-century warehouses, many of which have been converted into restaurants, galleries, and craft shops. The light in the morning is particularly beautiful for photography.

Afternoon: Sakaimachi and fresh seafood

Sakaimachi Street is Otaru's main shopping thoroughfare, famous for its glass studios and music box shops. Stop for lunch at one of the sushi restaurants along the street — Otaru's proximity to the sea means the fish is exceptionally fresh.

Return to Sapporo in the late afternoon, or continue directly to Niseko if you prefer to start Day 3 with more time in the mountains.

Day 3: Otaru to Niseko — Mountains and Hot Springs

The drive from Otaru to Niseko takes approximately 90 minutes along the scenic coastal route, passing through small fishing villages and offering views of the Sea of Japan. Your private driver can stop at viewpoints along the way.

Niseko in winter

Niseko receives some of the world's best powder snow, with an average of 15 metres falling each season. The resort area has four interconnected ski zones — Grand Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village, and Annupuri — offering terrain for all ability levels.

For Australian visitors in particular, Niseko's ski season (December–March) coincides with the southern hemisphere summer, making it one of the most popular winter ski destinations for Australians worldwide.

Niseko in summer and autumn

Outside ski season, Niseko offers hiking on Mount Yotei, river rafting, cycling, and farm experiences. The views of Yotei — Hokkaido's perfectly conical "Fuji" — are among the most photographed in Japan.

End the day in a Niseko onsen. The area's geothermal activity produces mineral-rich hot springs that are particularly restorative after a day of activity.

Day 4: Niseko to Biei and Furano — The Scenic Heart of Hokkaido

Day four is the most visually spectacular of the itinerary. The drive from Niseko to Biei and Furano takes you through the agricultural interior of Hokkaido — a landscape of rolling hills, patchwork fields, and flower farms that looks unlike anywhere else in Japan.

Biei: the patchwork hills and Blue Pond

Biei's famous patchwork hills — fields of wheat, potatoes, sunflowers, and lavender arranged in geometric patterns across rolling terrain — are best experienced by driving slowly along the Panorama Road and Patchwork Road routes.

The Blue Pond (Aoiike) is one of Hokkaido's most photographed natural phenomena — an artificially created pond whose water turns a vivid, otherworldly blue due to aluminium hydroxide particles. The colour shifts with the season and the light, and is most intense in summer.

Furano lavender fields — Hokkaido summer

Furano's lavender fields in full bloom — July is the peak season

Furano: lavender and farm landscapes

Furano is most famous for its lavender farms, which bloom in July and draw visitors from across the world. Farm Tomita is the most celebrated, with sweeping rows of purple lavender against a backdrop of mountains.

Outside lavender season, Furano's farms grow a succession of flowers — tulips, poppies, sunflowers, and cosmos — ensuring the landscape is colourful from May through October. In winter, Furano is a respected ski resort in its own right.

Day 5: Furano to New Chitose — A Gentle Farewell

Your final morning in Hokkaido is best spent slowly. If time allows, visit a local dairy farm for fresh milk and soft-serve ice cream — Hokkaido's dairy industry produces some of Japan's finest products, and farm visits are a genuine highlight for many visitors.

The drive from Furano to New Chitose Airport takes approximately 2 hours. Your JapanMe driver will time the departure to ensure a relaxed arrival at the airport with time to browse the terminal's excellent Hokkaido food and souvenir shops before your flight.

Practical Tips for the 5-Day Route

Best season for this route

July–August for lavender and summer scenery. December–February for powder skiing at Niseko. September–October for autumn foliage and harvest season. Spring (April–May) for cherry blossoms in Sapporo and Otaru.

Why private car hire is essential

This route covers five distinct destinations across a large geographic area. Public transport connections between Niseko, Biei, and Furano are limited and time-consuming. A private car hire allows you to move between destinations efficiently and stop at viewpoints that trains simply cannot reach.

Accommodation suggestions

Two nights in Sapporo, one night in Niseko, and one night in Furano or Biei works well. Alternatively, base yourself in Sapporo for the first two nights and Furano for the last two, with day trips to Otaru and Niseko.

Booking in advance

Niseko accommodation during ski season and Furano accommodation during lavender season (July) book out months in advance. Confirm your hotels before booking your flights, and arrange your private car hire at the same time to secure availability.

Considering More Time?

If you have a week or more, consider extending the itinerary to include Hakodate in the south — a historic port city with a stunning night view from Mount Hakodate — or Asahikawa in the north, gateway to Daisetsuzan National Park, Hokkaido's vast and largely untouched wilderness.
