Tokyo Haneda Airport — the most convenient hub for connecting to Hokkaido

Most international visitors to Hokkaido fly into Tokyo first — either Haneda (HND) or Narita (NRT) — and then take a domestic connection to Hokkaido. Understanding how this connection works, and which Tokyo airport to use, can save you significant time and stress.

This guide covers everything you need to know about connecting from Tokyo to Hokkaido, including which airport to use, how much time to allow, and whether the Shinkansen is a viable alternative.

Which Tokyo Airport Should You Use?

Tokyo has two international airports: Haneda (HND) and Narita (NRT). For connecting to Hokkaido, Haneda is almost always the better choice.

If your international flight arrives at Narita, you have two options: take a domestic connection from Narita (limited options, longer transfer), or take the Narita Express (N'EX) train to Haneda and connect from there. The N'EX journey takes approximately 90 minutes and costs around ¥3,000 ($20).

Domestic Flights from Tokyo to Hokkaido

Haneda to New Chitose (Sapporo)

The Haneda–New Chitose route is one of the busiest domestic air routes in the world, operated primarily by ANA and JAL with dozens of daily departures. Flight time is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Fares vary significantly — booking in advance on a discount fare can cost as little as ¥5,000–8,000 ($35–55), while last-minute full-fare tickets can exceed ¥30,000 ($200).

If you have a JR Pass, note that it does not cover domestic flights. However, the ANA and JAL "Visit Japan" discount fares (available to international visitors) can make flying very affordable.

Haneda to Hakodate

Hakodate is served by direct flights from Haneda, with ANA and JAL operating several daily services. Flight time is approximately 1 hour 20 minutes. Hakodate is also the southern terminus of the Hokkaido Shinkansen, making it accessible by high-speed train from Tokyo (see below).

Haneda to Asahikawa

Asahikawa Airport is served by direct flights from Haneda, operated by ANA and JAL. Flight time is approximately 1 hour 40 minutes. For visitors whose primary destinations are Biei, Furano, or Daisetsuzan, flying directly to Asahikawa rather than New Chitose can save 2–3 hours of ground travel time.

The Hokkaido Shinkansen: Is It Worth It?

Hokkaido's scenic rail routes — the Shinkansen is an option for Hakodate

The Hokkaido Shinkansen currently runs from Tokyo (Ueno/Tokyo Station) to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, with a bus connection to Hakodate city centre. The journey takes approximately 4 hours from Tokyo and is covered by the JR Pass.

For most visitors, flying is faster and often cheaper than the Shinkansen for reaching Hokkaido. However, the Shinkansen has advantages in specific situations:

  • You have a JR Pass and want to use it for this leg
  • You want to enjoy the journey as part of the experience
  • You are travelling to Hakodate specifically and want to avoid the airport connection process
  • You are combining Hokkaido with a broader Japan itinerary that includes Tohoku

Note: A Sapporo extension of the Hokkaido Shinkansen is under construction and expected to open in 2030. Once complete, this will significantly change the calculus for Tokyo–Sapporo travel.
