Hakodate Airport (HKD) is the main entry point for southern Hokkaido, serving both domestic flights from Tokyo and seasonal international connections. It is a compact, easy-to-navigate airport — but getting from the terminal to your hotel or onward destination requires some planning, particularly if you are travelling with luggage or arriving at night.
This guide covers all transport options from Hakodate Airport, with honest advice on when a private transfer is worth the cost and when public transport is perfectly adequate.
About Hakodate Airport
Hakodate Airport is located approximately 8 km east of Hakodate city centre. It is a small regional airport with a single terminal handling both domestic and international arrivals. The airport has basic facilities — a convenience store, a few restaurants, and a tourist information desk — but is not designed for long layovers.
Most international visitors arrive via a domestic connection from Tokyo (Haneda or Narita), Osaka, or Sapporo (New Chitose). The flight from Tokyo to Hakodate takes approximately 1 hour 20 minutes.
Transport Options from Hakodate Airport
| Option | Time | Cost | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airport Bus | ~20 min | ¥310 (~$2) | Solo budget travellers |
| Taxi | ~15 min | ¥2,000–2,500 (~$14–17) | Small groups, late arrivals |
| Private Transfer | ~15 min | From $180 (vehicle) | Groups, multi-stop, comfort |
Airport Bus
The Hakodate Airport Limousine Bus runs directly between the airport and Hakodate Station, stopping at major hotels along the route. The fare is ¥310 (approximately $2) and the journey takes around 20 minutes in normal traffic.
The bus is the most economical option and is perfectly adequate for solo travellers or couples with manageable luggage. However, it only runs to central Hakodate — if your hotel is in a different area, or if you want to continue to Onuma Quasi-National Park or the Yunokawa onsen district, you will need to arrange additional transport.
Taxi
Taxis are available at the designated stand outside the arrivals exit. The metered fare to central Hakodate is typically ¥2,000–2,500 ($14–17). Taxis are a reasonable option for late-night arrivals when buses have stopped, or for small groups where the cost per person is comparable to the bus.
English communication with taxi drivers in Hakodate can be limited. Having your hotel address written in Japanese is strongly recommended.

Private Transfer
A private car hire with JapanMe is the most flexible option, particularly if you are travelling as a group, carrying ski equipment or large luggage, or want to combine your airport transfer with a sightseeing stop.
Unlike a taxi, a private transfer can take you directly to any destination in southern Hokkaido — including Onuma, Yunokawa onsen, or even Niseko — without additional connections. Your driver will meet you in the arrivals hall with a name sign and assist with luggage.

When a Private Transfer Makes Sense

Hakodate's famous night view — one of Japan's top three night panoramas
A private transfer from Hakodate Airport is particularly worthwhile in the following situations:
- Travelling as a family or group of 3+ people, where the per-person cost approaches the bus fare
- Arriving in winter, when icy roads and heavy luggage make bus travel uncomfortable
- Wanting to stop at Mt. Hakodate for the night view en route to your hotel
- Continuing beyond Hakodate city to Onuma or other destinations without changing transport
- Arriving late at night when bus services have ended

Practical Tips for Hakodate Airport
Currency exchange
There is a currency exchange counter in the arrivals hall, but rates are typically worse than at city banks or ATMs. Use the 7-Eleven ATM inside the terminal for better rates.
IC cards
Hakodate's local buses accept IC cards (Suica, PASMO). Load your card at the airport or at Hakodate Station.
Winter arrivals
In winter (December–March), allow extra time for transport. Road conditions can slow journey times significantly, and taxis may be in high demand.
Luggage storage
Coin lockers are available at Hakodate Station if you want to explore the city before checking in. The airport itself does not offer long-term luggage storage.
