Biei & Furano, Hokkaido
About Biei & Furano
Biei and Furano form the heart of Hokkaido's most celebrated rural landscape, a region of gently rolling hills, patchwork farmland, and spectacular seasonal colour. Located in the Kamikawa Basin in central Hokkaido, the area is easily accessible from Asahikawa Airport and is approximately 2.5 hours from Sapporo by car.
Biei is famous for its "Patchwork Road" — a network of country lanes winding through hills planted with wheat, potatoes, sunflowers, and lavender. The area's most iconic landmarks include the Ken & Mary Tree, the Mild Seven Hills, and the ethereal Shirogane Blue Pond, whose cobalt-blue waters change colour with the light and season.
Furano, located just south of Biei, is synonymous with lavender — the town's lavender fields, particularly at Farm Tomita, are among Japan's most photographed landscapes. The peak season runs from late June to early August, when the hillsides turn purple and the air is filled with fragrance.

Lavender & Flowers
Farm Tomita is Japan's most famous lavender farm, located in Nakafurano. The farm's hillside lavender fields, which bloom from late June to early August, are one of Hokkaido's most iconic images. Beyond lavender, the farm grows a rainbow of seasonal flowers and produces lavender-based products, perfumes, and ice cream.

Natural Wonder
The Shirogane Blue Pond is one of Japan's most photographed natural phenomena — an artificial pond whose waters glow an ethereal cobalt blue due to naturally occurring aluminium hydroxide. The pond is surrounded by dead silver birch trees that rise from the water, creating a hauntingly beautiful landscape that changes dramatically with the seasons.
